Anti Lag was first used in the 1980’s by Formula 1 race teams. Rally competitors picked up the technology from the Formula 1 teams. The restrictions in rally racing had become extremely stringent in regards to air intake inlet sizing. It seems in this day and age all sorts of turbo charged cars use this system. No matter the arena will you likely be able to find some sort of ALS being utilized. Drifters, rally racers, drag racers, and street racers use this power building technique to push their vehicles to the absolute limit as quickly as possible.
ALS, or Anti Lag System, is a process used with turbo charged engines that allows the turbo to build boost pressure without the gas pedal being depressed. This action allows much faster acceleration which leads to a higher level of performance. Many systems take control of the throttle body. The system keeps the inlet plate open 12 to 20% when engaged. Other systems feed air directly to the exhaust manifold. Either way the ALS system gets the job done. Another form of ALS is called Two-Step. It uses many of the same process to build boost pressure of torque from a stand still.
This versatile technology not only helps drivers and their teams. It also gives spectators one hell of a sight and sound show. Loud pops and crackles are accompanied by flame thrower type pryotechnics that would leave KISS speechless. Each vehicle and engine that uses ALS has a different sound to it.
